The 2015 South Indian floods resulted from heavy rainfall during the annual north-east monsoon in November–December. Tamil Nadu and in particular, the cities of Chennai and Cuddalore were hit hard. In Chennai, the intensity of rain was so overwhelming that in the intervening period of December 1st – 2nd, the flood-ravaged city received more rainfall in 24 hours than it had seen on any day since 1901, according to statistics presented by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Nearly 400 people have died and over 1.8 million people have been displaced. Apart from that, the ongoing impact of flooding i.e. damage to public and private property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock and deteriorating health conditions owing to water-borne diseases, have resulted in raising the victim toll. Unavailability of electricity, public transport and even basic necessities like drinking water and bread have made things worse.
It is now our duty to help our brothers and sisters in Chennai in every possible way. Hence Indian Student Association of Leuven (ISAL) has decided to collect funds in order to provide relief materials and to help the city rise and shine again. We will ensure that every penny collected will be properly utilized for the right cause.
We will transfer the funds collected to the Indian Embassy's (to Belgium) account as per their instructions, who will in turn, transfer the funds to Prime Minister's relief fund (PM Relief Fund). We ensure full transparency and will keep you informed with latest developments at all stages.
